8 Bad Work Habits (And How to Break Them)

by Margaret Steen, for Yahoo! HotJob

When you're considering goals for yourself, don't forget to examine your work life. What changes could you make to become a more productive and pleasant colleague?

Experts offer this list of common bad habits at work -- and how to break them:

* Planning poorly. Do you spend your first hour at work wondering what you should work on today? "So many people, when they leave their office at 4 to 6 p.m., really have no clue what they're going to do first thing the following morning," said Glenn Davis, president of the Next Step Group, which recruits sales and sales management professionals for software and other companies. It's more efficient to plan your next day before you leave work.

* Spending the day in "email reaction mode." Answering every email message as it comes in may make you seem responsive, but it's not productive. "You feel like you're being a hero because you're dealing with all your email," said Valerie Frederickson, CEO & founder of Valerie Frederickson & Co., an HR executive search and consulting firm. "But it has nothing to do with achieving your goals."

* Abusing work-from-home privileges. Yes, you save time when you work from home by not commuting. But too many people are easily sidetracked by the laundry, their kids, a quick errand. "People like to say, 'I get so much more done'" working from home, Davis said. And some do -- but not everyone. If you work from home, make sure you're putting in a full day's work -- and that you're accessible to your colleagues during the workday.

* Putting personal life before work. Everyone has emergencies from time to time. But it's annoying to have to repeatedly fill in for the colleague who is late every morning because he's checking on his home remodeling project, or who misses an entire afternoon because she scheduled a routine dentist appointment for 1:30 p.m.

* Being late for meetings. People who show up 5 or 10 minutes late for a meeting cause a "domino effect," Davis said. Meetings later that day may be thrown off schedule because the earlier ones ran late. And people who show up on time feel their time is being wasted.

* Not taking care of health and hygiene. Leslie G. Griffen, an HR consultant and career coach, is sometimes hired by companies to approach an employee who doesn't bathe and ask them to improve their hygiene. The problem is twofold, said Griffen, principal of The Griffen Group. A sloppy appearance will cause a poor first impression. Also, "if your hygiene is bad, your health is probably bad," Griffen said. An added benefit of eating well and exercising: You'll have more energy.

* Using inappropriate humor. Your coworkers may not appreciate your sense of humor. Skip the off-color or "racially targeted" jokes, Griffen said. And be careful about sensitive subjects such as politics and religion.

* Not caring about your work. People like coworkers who are enthusiastic about what they do. Show that you take pride in your job by presenting yourself well, communicating clearly and doing your best work.

Jobs that will never go away

Yahoo! HotJobs
by Romy LeClaire Loran, FindtheRightSchool.com

Choosing a career path can be challenging. Half of all college students change their majors at least once as they travel the sometimes bumpy road that will lead right degree. If you want to follow your dreams as well as provide for a certain future, take heart. As long as human beings continue to inhabit the planet, there are many worthwhile and fulfilling jobs that will never go away.

Accountant
As long as there are taxes, there will be a need for skilled accountants to work with clients, helping them keep their books in order. While accounting technology becomes more sophisticated, many accountants also assist clients with the technological aspects of record keeping and tax preparation. An online degree can prepare you for this field by providing accounting coursework and career training. Many assistant accountants begin with training and an associate's degree. Armed with a bachelor's degree in accounting, you could make an average annual salary of $63,180, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Computer Support Specialist
If you thrive on helping your friends and family solve their computer woes, consider becoming a computer support specialist. With computers playing such an important part of daily life, computer support specialists provide their clients much needed technical assistance. As a computer support specialist, you will meet with clients in person or answer questions remotely, via Internet, or on the phone. Many computer support specialists either have a bachelor's degree in computer science or an associate's degree in a computer-related program. In 2007, computer support specialists made an average annual salary of $45,300, according to the BLS.

Entrepreneur
To be an entrepreneur you need to be an independent, outgoing risk taker as you establish your own business or company. Although it may be hard to know whether a business will succeed, there will always be a need for a variety of goods and services and businesses to supply them. An online degree in business can help make your dreams a reality, as you earn your associate's or bachelor's degree. Although salaries can vary greatly with the self-employed, small business owners made an average annual wage of $36,000 to $75,095 in 2008, according to Pay Scale.

Mechanic
As anyone who commutes or runs to the store knows, we live in a nation of automobiles. If you know the make and model of every automobile that zips by and have an interest in what's under the hood, consider becoming an automotive service technician or mechanic. Automotive service technicians and mechanics diagnose problems with cars and light trucks and fix them. Mechanics need to be analytical, good problem solvers, and willing to work with computerized diagnostic tools and programs as well as traditional tools. You can also specialize in an area such as brakes or cooling systems. Online career training can get you started. Programs range from six months to two years. Mechanics made an average annual salary of $36,480 in 2007, according to the BLS.

Paramedic
Paramedics make life and death decisions, assessing injuries and providing emergency medical care. To be a paramedic you have to be agile, strong, and be willing to work under pressure. Although the hours can be long, many paramedics find great satisfaction in helping others. An EMT paramedic has usually taken courses in anatomy and physiology and completed a one-to-two-year program -- or the equivalent of an associate's degree. Basic and intermediate certification can get you started in this fast paced, much needed career. According to the BLS, paramedics earned an average of $30,870 annually in 2007.

Teacher
As long as human beings continue to have children, there will be a need for teachers. If you enjoy working with young children and want to teach, you can make $50,040 on average annually if you are an elementary school teacher, and $52,450 annually if you are a secondary teacher, according to the BLS. Elementary teachers have the pleasure of teaching all subjects. Secondary teachers also get to follow their bliss. By focusing on specific certification areas, secondary teachers specialize in the subjects they want to teach. Many online programs can get you started towards a bachelor's degree in education and certification.

Whatever your calling may be, with the right degree and career training, your career prospects for these much-needed jobs can help keep you from becoming outsourced or even worse, obsolete.

I picked this up from yahoo! If we have serious doubt about careers, about our present job, worrying over our children's future, fear not folks, for the answers is found here. But how long will it last, that you have to find out sooner or later in real life.

Avoid this happenin' .........

How can we ever avoid this? Is the world moving too fast for most of us?
Is the world getting poorer by the day, by the hour?
Or is it OUR OWN DOING.

This picture shows a Beggar with a child sitting by a side-walk begging for alms.
This shouldn't be happening but is it avoidable with these economic crisis hitting most richer countries all over the globe?

What are the counter measures to be taken to ensure this do not affect us in the end?

Is their Government of the day not batting an eyelid when knowing these conditions, too busy looking after their ownselves and neglecting the affairs of their own people??

Do not let this happen to our caring society.

Let us share comments here.

Barisan Nasional Vs. Parti Keadilan Rakyat

It's a straight fight between Malcolm Mussen against Jawah Gerang for the vacant Batang Ai DUN seat N29. This is according to our constitution after the sudden demised of incumbent, Dublin Unting.

Last Sun 29th Mar, was the Nomination Day and by 12 noon it was announced Johnny Chuat had "given" up an idea of challenging both of them.

However, Johnny decided to lend his support to the PKR, which received an enormous booster ahead of polling day.

It's a "hot seat" for the ruling BN, definitely no easy passage for the "newcomer" into politics. This is like going through "baptism of fire" for Malcolm.

Best of luck to him. Sentiments on the ground is very vocal about BN, especially the land issues, Salcra. It's getting too hot to handle for some of the folks, there.

Johnny most certainly made both parties sweat profusely and it was a huge relief for the MB for Selangor, when Johnny decided to go for Pakatan instead.

We shall see the outcome early April. Onward we go till the next Elections???

I can't help noticing the younger generations definitely, surely moving away from BN's component parties. In LA, the signs are obviously there for all to see. As they paraded across town with banners, placards with messages written across them. The voting trend will affect the showing of the BN parties in the coming Elections.
Yes. This are worrying signs for the elected-Government of the day.
If the campigners can swing the older folks' mindset away from voting for BN, an UPSET is not impossible this time around.
Elsewhere, in Semenanjung the "winds of change" forthcoming or not??
Watch out for the MONEY game, the roots of all evil, but a dear friend to nearly everyone including me?? So, what's your worth?? tsk tsk...
Selling out one's principle for monetary gains is something we have got to live with today. Whatever the outcome, at the end of the day, we have to put food on our tables. But I will sweat till blood comes out together with my sweat.

To God, the glory, the REASON I'm alive today!

PS: Pls leave yr comment(s) on this by-Elections.
Thank you for sharing & giving.

Today, Johnny Ak.Chuat collected his Nomination Papers!

It looks like a three-corner fight between BN, PKR & the Independent candidate, Johnny Ak. Chuat. Details about JC's Nomination Forms came via uchukeling.com this afternoon. It's going to be very intriguing and interesting. There is so much speculations about some "invisble hands" working behind the scenes.
Time will tell. For now, let us hear what the Candidates have to say about what its ALL ABOUT !!
Looks like SNAP opted out this round.

De Maria Design Redondo Beach House

With its modern lines and appealing spaces, the award-winning Redondo Beach House by De Maria Design turns heads. The luxury beach-side showpiece was built from eight prefabricated, recycled steel shipping containers, along with some traditional building materials. According to the architects, the modified containers are "nearly indestructible," as well as resistant to mold, fire, and termites. Seventy percent of the building was efficiently assembled in a shop, saving time, money, and resources.

One of the containers can even sport a pool! The lessons learned from Redondo Beach House are being incorporated into a line of more affordable, accessible designs, soon available as Logical Homes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the price of houses up & up these days, it's quite practical to come up with this "concept housing" though it may not be viable due to our weather here. But we can't deny the costs involved. It's cheap & looks comfortable, too.

Kemaya aritu rega rumah makin mar dibeli, enti sema kitai ulih neladan urang menua tasik ti begaga ke rumah ngena "container" tentu kos ia jauh murah, tang kada ka diau dalam tu "selesa" agi ari ba rumah ti biasa alai kitai mayuh diau, laban ari kitai ditu enda sabaka menua tasik??

Tau tinggal ke komen kitai, aku ka ninga ke tanya nya tadi.

Meeting Malaysia's notorious triads

As part of the BBC's Who Runs Your World? series, Jonathan Kent in Kuala Lumpur looks at how Malaysia's notorious triad gangs are run.

In my attempt to find out more the triads, I made the ground rules clear from the start.

I didn't want specifics, I didn't want details and I certainly didn't want names. I just wanted to know how the gangs worked.

I have no idea what Ah Hing's real name is, but I do know that he is being groomed to take over as tai ko - big brother (a term triad members use for their bosses) - in a gang that operates in a small town in northern Malaysia.

We had chosen a room in an old shop house in which to meet. Ah Hing looked like many working class Malaysian Chinese, with heavy jewellery, cheap shoes and spiky hair. His minder collected tattoos.

"We do sell some ecstasy pills and that is how we make a living, me and my friends," he said.

"We do take girls for prostitution, and this is much easier to do than ecstasy because usually the government will not bother us when we do this."

I admit that I am a bad guy, and that I'm a gangster
Ah Hing

The triads and Malaysia's other criminal gangs dabble in any number of rackets. Some even smuggle opiated cough syrup.

Dealing drugs in Malaysia carries the death penalty. Hangmen got a pay rise earlier this year - it is an issue the government takes seriously.

Prostitution is easier to get away with, and so is loan sharking or making and peddling fake goods. Malaysia is thought to be the world's largest producer of pirated optical discs.

But Ah Hing runs girls and sells pills. The women cost the gangs between $750 and $2000 each. They are bought and sold like cattle, and the pimps want a return.

"The girls know they have to work to pay back the money we paid to buy them," Ah Hing said.

"We do find girls who refuse to work, and we will keep them in solitary confinement and give them a bad time until they tell me they want to work," he said.

Ancient rituals

The triads have their roots in a 17th Century movement dedicated to restoring China's Ming dynasty to the throne, but over time they degenerated into criminal gangs.

We have some cases where [those owing debts] have been assaulted
Michael Chong, Malaysian Chinese Association

In some places they still have rituals, as Jessica Lau, a well-connected member of the Malaysian Chinese community, found out.

When Ms Lau lived in New Zealand, her neighbour was a Hong Kong triad boss who decided to retire.

"During his very last days as the leader of the triad society, he gathered everybody from his society and in front of leaders from other societies he washed his hands in a gold basin which symbolised that from today onwards he is not going to be involved in the triad society any more, and now he is old and respectable and a free man," she said.

But Malaysia's triads are rather more prosaic than those in Hong Kong. The element of ceremony has gone, and these groups are run as businesses.

Ah Hing referred to his as "our company". It's a pragmatic affair, where deals are reached with the authorities - who set boundaries for crimes they know can never be eliminated.

"If I want to operate on a particular street and ask a politician to ask the authorities not to disturb me, the politician might say: 'It's impossible to have zero arrests, so you can operate on certain hours and we will patrol after those hours' - so it's a win-win situation," Ah Hing said.

If someone crosses him, however, it's most certainly not win-win.

"If someone betrays me personally... I will get a few gang members together and beat him up until he's paralysed or he's a vegetable, but if the matter is really big then they'll be brought before my tai ko for a trial," he said.

"If my tai ko asks us to deal with someone, even if we kill that person, we won't be worried, because if the police arrest us, my tai ko will get me out," he added.

"Last time I was taken in the front door of the [police] lock-up, and right away I walk out of the back door."

Part of society

Most Malaysians have little or nothing to do with the triads. But many poorer people have nowhere else to turn when they need to borrow money.

All too often, Michael Chong, head of public services for the political party the Malaysian Chinese Association, sees what happens when borrowers default on their payments.

"We do have cases where they run away, you know, with the family... and of course we have some cases where they have been assaulted - assaulted in the sense they have to be hospitalised," Mr Chong said.

Ah Hing makes no bones about his world and his life. "I admit that I am a bad guy, and that I'm a gangster," he said.

"So who runs your world?" I asked - to which he gave a simple reply : "The government".

"If the government doesn't want to be a bit lenient with us and if they are strict about everything, then there's no way that I can make a living. There's no work," Ah Hing said.

When the economic downturn of 1998 hit Asia, many Malaysians turned to the triads for work.

It allowed thousand to fill their rice bowls.

That in itself is reason enough for some in power to turn a blind eye to what these gangs do - that and the knowledge that the triads are there to make a living, not to cause trouble.

They may be bad men, but they're also businessmen.

Fulham 2 United 0 >21/03/2009 Report by:- Adam Bostock

United's rare abberation against Liverpool became a blip as Fulham fought their way to a shock victory at Craven Cottage.

The damage caused by Danny Murphy's first-half penalty and Zoltan Gera's late goal on the break was compounded by red cards for Paul Scholes, for handling a goalbound effort, and substitute Wayne Rooney for two bookable offences. Given Nemanja Vidic's existing ban, the Reds will now be without three key players for the vital Aston Villa clash on Sunday 5 April.

Sir Alex Ferguson made five changes to the side that suffered a demoralising home defeat to Liverpool. Jonny Evans replaced the suspended Vidic; the other four adjustments recalled Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes to the midfield and brought Dimitar Berbatov into attack alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fulham fielded the same team that impressively beat Bolton away last weekend but was crushed 4-0 by United at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup only a fortnight ago. Clint Dempsey had been the Cottagers’ main doubt with a bout of food poisoning but he was involved from the start and how, suffering the first foul from Scholes inside 20 seconds and then striking the first shot wide of the target moments later.

United returned fire with Berbatov heading over from an Evra cross but otherwise Fulham enjoyed most of the opening moments in the spring sunshine. Bobby Zamora and Simon Davies also flexed their shooting muscles, albeit inaccurately.

Fellow red devils, what has gone wrong?? It's puzzling losing 2 consecutive games. Is it a case of fatigue, losing zest losing steam, players getting pathetic, I don't know? Pls leave your comment. I'd love to hear YOUR side of the story why MU of late is out of sorts.

Interesting happening this morning, I was driving behind this car, proudly displaying a "Shophouse For Sale" somewhere in MJC, Batu Kawa. This saves money, but I was thinking if this sort of act is against our JPJ Laws?
Well, we will soon know if it's wrong to do that. The rear view is not blocked, as it is placed by the side of the car screen.

Champions League draw

Defending European champions Manchester United drew Portuguese title holders FC Porto during Friday's Champions League quarter-final draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The match brings back memories of 2004, when then Porto boss Jose Mourinho charged up the Old Trafford touchline in delight after a 90th-minute Costinha goal took the Portuguese side through at the expense of the English team.

Liverpool drew Chelsea yet again and means Rafa Benitez's 2005 champions will face last season's beaten finalists for the fourth time in the knock-out stages in five seasons. The duo have also previously met in the group stages of the competition, making it five meetings in a row.

Arsenal will play their first leg away to Villarreal in a repeat of the semi-final of 2006, although the Gunners played the first match at home on that occasion and went through 1-0 on aggregate after success at Highbury.

Barcelona, winners in 2006 drew Bayern Munich, champions in 2001 and the German giants have never lost to the La Liga leaders in Europe.

The winners of Liverpool's match against Chelsea will face the winners of Barcelona's match against Bayern for a place in the final.

United will take on Arsenal for a place in the Rome showdown - assuming both Premier League teams win their quarter-final ties.

Boss demands a response!

Sir Alex Ferguson rued defensive errors against Liverpool, but refused to castigate Nemanja Vidic and says his side will now do one thing: respond.

United have become accustomed to having things their own way at Old Trafford this season, so defeat – and 4-1 to our fiercest rivals – sticks in the throat. “It’s difficult to defend a 4-1 defeat. We got in front and then threw the game away. It’s a hard one to take,” admitted the boss. “But at this club it’s always about how you respond. When you lose a game: respond. And that is what we will do.”

Vidic made an error for Liverpool’s first goal, and his second-half sending off for a foul on Steven Gerrard led to their third goal on the way to an embarrassing scoreline. But Sir Alex didn't stick the boot in. “Nemanja has been unbelievably consistent for us this season. Players do have off days, and he’s made a mistake. He’s a human being, all players make mistakes. It’s just a costly one for us.”

The United boss didn’t have any complaints about the Serbian’s sending off. “It looked as if he [Gerrard] was clear to have a shot at goal. Whether Rio could have got across, I don’t know. I couldn't really argue with the decision. We’d have been looking for a red card if it was against us.

“It was one of those days, we made uncharacteristic mistakes. In big games you don’t want to do that. If you see the consistency of our defending over the last two years, you don’t expect it. If you win 4-1 at Old Trafford you deserve the plaudits, you can’t deny Liverpool that.

“But if the league was starting today, you’d take a four-point advantage with a game in hand. The goal difference is narrowed, it’s only five goals now. It was a bad day, but we have to kick on."

Liverpool Must Beat Man Utd

Friday March 13, 2009
Liverpool must beat United to keep title dream alive

LONDON: Liverpool’s hopes of becoming English champions for the first time in 19 years will either fizzle out or be unexpectedly resurrected at Manchester United tomorrow — depending on which Liverpool team turn up.

The Old Trafford clash (8.45pm Malaysian time) is shaping up as the pivotal match of the season as both clubs eye the Premier League title, having made it through to the last eight of the Champions League this week.

Their intense rivalry is due in part to the fact that their city rivals Everton and Manchester City have rarely challenged for major honours over the last decade, increasing the pressure on Liverpool and United to assert their authority over each other.

If the Liverpool side that demolished Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday come out with all guns blazing and win at Old Trafford then their title challenge will be back on.

But if they produce one of the pedestrian displays that have cost them vital points against lesser opposition in the last few months, they will fail to take all three points and their title dreams will be over.

United, though, also go into the match on a high following their 2-0 win over Inter Milan at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

They have won their last 11 League matches and been playing consistently well, in stark contrast to erratic Liverpool.

Rafael Benitez’s side led the table from the end of November until the middle of January when United went top and it still seems inconceivable after their awesome display on Tuesday that the same Liverpool players are capable of producing such uninspiring performances in the League.

Like United, Liverpool have lost only two League matches all season, but they have drawn 10 — twice as many as United — and now trail them by seven points having played one more match and are third, behind Chelsea on goal difference.

However, Benitez believes his side can complete what would be a remarkable winning double by beating United to maintain their interest in the title race.

After beating Real, he told reporters: “We have an important game next, but we have played well here, scored four goals and are very confident. That is the best way to prepare for such a game.

“It was important for us to play that well, but we are now facing a very good team and we must win to close the gap at the top.”

Chelsea have rediscovered their form under Dutch coach Guus Hiddink and will be full of confidence after their aggregate victory over Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday when they play Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Aston Villa, without a win in six matches but hanging on to fourth place ahead of an Arsenal side who have clicked back into form, face a Tottenham Hotspur team, still not safe from relegation despite being in 12th, on Sunday - REUTERS
